In fact, it is common for people to feel anxious before surgery, and that is why anxiety-fighting drugs, such as benzodiazepines, are often used to reduce these symptoms.

In an analysis of 2015 clinical studies with 774 patients, melatonin was compared to midazolam – a sleep-inducing anxiolytic, or to a placebo sugar pill when administered before surgery.

Most of the studies analyzed found that taking melatonin would work better on you than a placebo pill and was approximately as effective as midazolam in reducing your anxiety.

Another study conducted in 2018 with 90 patients at the Clinical Hospital of Rajasthan, India, found that melatonin worked in you the same manner as alprazolam, a drug indicated for the treatment of anxiety disorders.

In the same year, research by the University of Medical Sciences in Tehran, Iran, found that melatonin worked better for you than oxazepam, a sedative, to improve sleep and reduce symptoms of anxiety.

Melatonin Dosage For Your Anxiety Symptoms
