Tomato: The red juice promotes Healing Enjoyment

Tomato juice is so popular on air travel that airlines do not have much to laugh about, if they do not even have it in their range. Even the ancient Aztecs appreciated the tomato juice as a remedy. Whether cardiovascular disease, infertility or cancer: In the meantime, numerous scientific studies have confirmed that the delicious red juice promotes health in many ways and reduces the risk of illness.

Tomato juice tastes completely different on the plane

Tomato juice is one of the most sought-after vegetable juices, along with carrot and beetroot juice. But while fruit juices are very popular, vegetable juices are rarely used. Every  enjoys around 40 liters of fruit juice a year, but only 1 liter of vegetable juice, although it contains fewer calories and sugars.

It is amazing that the tomato juice enjoys an extraordinary popularity especially on air travel. For example, on board Lufthansa in 2008, 1.7 million liters were served. When the US airline United cut the juice from the menu in the summer of 2018, she was promptly rewarded with a shitstorm – now he can be ordered there as well.

The secret was already revealed in 2010: A study by the Fraunhofer Institute has shown that the taste of tomato juice is perceived very differently on the ground and in the air.

While Scientists described tomato juice as musty at atmospheric pressure, at low pressure were seductive fruity aromas and cooling as well as sweet taste nuances in the focus.

Drinking tomato juice instead of eating vegetables

The American Society for Nutrition (ASN) recommends eating three servings of vegetables (about 400 grams) daily. This can improve health status and reduce the risk of illness. Unfortunately, Europeans consume on average only about 50 percent of the recommended daily amount.

A study at the University of California Davis has shown that vegetable juices such as tomato juice can help to achieve the recommended daily amount of vegetables, i.e by replacing a vegetable portion with a glass (200 ml) of vegetable juice. But there are many more good reasons to drink tomato juice more often.

Protection against liver diseases, intestinal tumors and prostate cancer

As in the tomato itself, of course, many bioactive substances in the tomato juice such as vitamin C, polyphenols and carotenoids, which contribute to the prevention of cancer and liver disease among other things.

For example, a study at the University of Murcia has shown that tomato juice helps keep the liver healthy by eliminating free radicals and positively affecting the cell cycle.

A study by Italian researchers has shown that the carotenoid lycopene contained in the tomato juice counteracts cell proliferation and the growth of intestinal tumors. In addition, tomato juice is expected to reduce the risk of prostate cancer, as confirmed by a comprehensive review at the University of Illinois 2018.

Processed tomatoes performed better than raw, which is attributed to the better bioavailability of lycopene in cooked tomato dishes .

Tomato juice for the heart, the vessels and the cholesterol level

Chronic inflammations pave the way not only cancer, but many other diseases. A Spanish study has shown that the consumption of tomato juice reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, as it counteracts inflammation and thus arteriosclerosis.

However, Greek researchers have found that tomato juice is good for people with metabolic syndrome. The subjects drank tomato juice twice a day for two months, after which their levels of inflammation, feelings, and insulin resistance improved. While the bad LDL cholesterol was lowered, good HDL cholesterol increased.

Sperm quality is improving

According to a Japanese study , regular consumption of tomato juice can also help infertile men. After drinking a can of tomato juice (containing 30 milligrams lycopene) daily for 12 weeks, sperm motility, which can be adversely affected by inflammation, was significantly improved.

Tomato juice in the test

Keep your eyes open when buying industrially produced tomato juice. The quality usually leaves much to be desired. A test of 13 tomato juices showed that not a single one got a good rating: 10 received a satisfactory and 3 were even classified as deficient.

It was criticized, among other things, that the juices were too rediluted back and contained several ingredients, although on the packaging “100 percent fruit content” was read. In addition, up to 9.5 grams of salt per liter were in the juices. Not least, the aroma could not convince at all.

If you want to buy tomato juice, then do it in the organic supermarket. But the juices are also pasteurized there and have been on the shelf for a while, so that the vital substances have suffered. Therefore, make your tomato juice best yourself aromatic and fresh.

And if you do not have a juicer, then put fully ripened tomatoes in your blender, add more water depending on consistency, maybe herbs such as basil and oregano, mix well and then pour the tomato smoothie (which you can drink unsweetened, of course) ) through a fine sieve.

Now you can taste it with salt and pepper to taste.
